- Abstract
- The project sets forth a theological rationale for a program of gifts discovery within a local congregation. It also reports the results of such a pilot program in a United Methodist church in Texas in 1987. Gifts are identified as abilities, ordinary and extraordinary, which can contribute to the purpose of the church as it serves the reign of God. Many varied resources for gifts clarification are identified and analyzed. Ministries are defined as services which are rendered by all members of the church, lay and clergy, within and outside the church's gathered life. The study outlines the efforts of a gifts discovery project in a local congregation. The work of the planning team, an evaluation of their work, and an evaluation of the project are included. The essential elements of a ministry of gifts discovery are identified. An extensive bibliography on gifts and ministry is included.
