Abstract
  • The author describes two rituals developed to address the transition experienced in a nursing home following the death of a resident. The Service of Remembrance and Consecration provides an avenue for the staff and residents to mourn and to prepare for a new resident's arrival. The Welcoming Ceremony facilitates the second phase of the transition in which a new resident becomes part of the nursing home community. The study integrates the findings of an evaluation of this second ceremony with a transition framework to demonstrate that the ceremony is an important resource for a healthy transition process.
