- Abstract
- The dissertation was concerned with the spiritual disciplines that spiritually vital pastors use to remain vital. The methodology used in the research was the case study method. The project focused on twelve interviews of pastors from Southern Baptist churches in the state of Kentucky. The interview schedule was designed around nine research questions. The conclusions reached are as follows. All twelve pastors stressed the importance, or the essence of the spiritual disciplines to their ministry. All twelve pastors identified the importance of the spiritual disciplines but struggled with various obstacles in practicing the disciplines. Eleven of the twelve stated that their 'devotional reading' of the Bible was separate from sermon preparation. Eight of the twelve pastors became practitioners of spiritual disciplines due to mentors early in their spiritual journey.
