Abstract
  • The thesis of this study was to show that understanding the differences between one's religion and the religion of others based on doctrinal positions alone is insufficient. One must seek to understand the historical and psychosocial dimensions of religious involvement as well. The method of study for the thesis was the psychosocial, historical, and doctrinal comparison of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Unification Church, and Protestant evangelicals. The research showed that, at any given point in history, persons may join a religious movement for psychosocial reasons rather than doctrinal ones.
