Abstrakt

This project proposes that Lakota Catholics, in their grieving practices and rituals on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, have integrated rituals from the Lakota and Christian traditions to form a merged culture that meets their grieving needs. The project explores current grieving practices on the reservation, Lakota cultural resources that facilitate good grieving, and the ways that Lakota people become enmeshed in their grieving. Traumatic deaths, conflicted grieving, and multiple loss complicate Lakota grieving. The project offers principles for pastoral ministry to people in grief based on the experience of Lakota people and ministry among them.
