- Abstract
- The study explores the perceptions of the work of the Holy Spirit in preaching by focusing on the concept of anointing of the sermon. A literature review revealed several areas where preachers believe the Spirit brings anointing to a sermon including the personal preparation of the preacher, the sermon, the listener, the preaching event itself, and the Word of God. A survey of 178 Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) pastors was conducted. The thesis of this study is that people anticipate different evidence of the Spirit's presence and activity with a primary focus on emotion or content. Age, gender, race, education, and other variables influence what evidence a listener anticipates.
