Abstract
  • A servant-model ministry is an appropriate approach for addressing persons and families suffering from abuse of alcohol and alcohol-related problems. Based on characteristics and functions of biblical persons specifically designated as 'servants of the Lord', the servant-model ministry includes the following dimensions: political leadership, prophetic address, priestly mediation, and suffering with the afflicted. Energetic leadership by the church through congregational pastors and elders in preventative and rehabilitative programs is implied. Alcohol education, influence towards sound legislation, counseling and care of victims, cooperation with secular agencies in rehabilitative endeavors, and close identification with people's suffering are included in the church's efforts to minister in this area of need.
