Abstract
  • The teachings of Evagrius, St. John Climacus, and St. John of the Cross concerning spiritual formation and direction can be successfully applied in a modern parish to nurture individual spiritual growth. The author served as spiritual director for nine individuals over ten weeks as they engaged practices of prayer, silence, the Jesus Prayer, inner purification and detachment, and awareness of and insight into their thoughts. Evaluative methods included surveys, field notes, and participants' journals. There was sufficient data to suggest that all participants experienced some type of positive change, growth, or insight as a result of participation in the project.
