Abstract
  • This project proposes a revised practice of spirituality to assist spiritual directors of priests in constructing spirituality. In examining the culture of diocesan priests in the US since 1965, the project finds two dominant identity metaphors--priest-as-mediator and priest-as-minister--and traces their historical roots through a series of 'flash points.' A systematic understanding of priestly spirituality emerges from study of five spiritual practices--attention to oneself, public and private use of psalms, preaching, collaboration, relationship to structures--that are examined in relation to each metaphor.
