Abstract
  • In 2004, the author was appointed to Sterling United Methodist Church due largely in part to a request for a mission-oriented pastor. Upon arrival, he found that the congregation did not have any exposure or experience in mission. This case study will follow Sterling's journey as it utilized a seven-stage strategy: (1) finding the motive, (2) becoming grounded theologically and in faith, (3) gathering information, (4) initiating the process, (5) having effective communication, (6) official reporting, and (7) evaluation as needed. In the end, Sterling United Methodist Church was able to transform from a small-membership church to a mission-oriented congregation.
