Abstract
  • Solidarity with the poor is a crucial component of faithful discipleship. Practices of solidarity with the poor develop stronger, deeper, more discerning faith. The research reflected in this work includes: (1) a probe into sociological and economic causes for homelessness and poverty, (2) theological research of 'powers and principalities' to indicate that the social structures and institutions which abet the plight of poverty have a spiritual dimension and can be dealt with redemptively, and (3) a biblical survey which supports what this work contends is a faithful response of the church to the issues of homelessness and poverty. This research challenged those participating in the ministry project to take a close look at their middle-class complacency concerning issues of poverty and homelessness. It led to a deeper commitment to serve God through serving 'the least of these' (Matthew 25:40), and fomented an exchange of ideas for practical expressions of solidarity with the poor.
