Abstract
  • A novel Uncovered in the Presence underscores the contention that members of many religious groups transmit the qualities of self-leadership and openness which are prized by Naturalistic Humanists who may be unchurched. In the novel, students and faculty members take part in a retreat at Mainstream Seminary. They react in various ways to the discovery of Ellen Shepherd's body in the anteroom of Centennial Hall. In time, they come together to celebrate their different qualities. Iowa Humanists advised the author as she developed the story of Paul Bartlett, a Unitarian Universalist minister who is accused of causing Ellen's death.
