Abstract
  • Lay care-givers can become an important part of pastoral care in the local church through becoming involved in the ministry of spiritual direction. Lay care-givers (elders and deacons) attended a two-day workshop in which they were presented with a brief history and explanation of pastoral care and spirituality, and introduced to the concept of 'spiritually centered pastoral care' or spiritual direction by lay care-givers. The conclusion of the study was that the concept was valid but that the material would have been better presented in a series of weekly meetings.
