Abstract
  • The purpose of this practicum/project is to prepare the pastor and laity of the Burlington United Methodist Church to reach out to inactive members. Dr John Savage's program on Calling and Caring Ministries is used as the method for training, calling preparation, and on-going support. In-depth listening skills are taught to participants as the primary means of addressing the needs of inactive members. Listening skills training precedes the calling phase of the practicum/project and both the training and calling give participants experience in reaching church drop-outs. The practicum was conducted over a six-month period of time. The pastor attended two training events, a group of nine lay persons was recruited, lay training and calling experiences were evaluated. The practicum revealed the importance of pastoral and lay training in preparation for calling on inactive members. Recognizing the early signs of inactivity and making an immediate, caring response will reduce the number of church drop-outs. Taking an active interest in the needs of inactive members proved to be beneficial to them, the callers, and the church.
