- Abstract
- The basic problem addressed by the project is the disparity between the present eucharistic piety of the United Methodist Church and the high sacramentalism of John and Charles Wesley. The basic purpose was to aid United Methodists in the appropriation of their catholic heritage through an actual study of the pertinent eucharistic writings of the two Wesleys. The largest part of the dissertation deals with the following eucharistic motifs found in the Wesleyan literature: constant communion, real presence, sacrifice and medicine of immortality. Attention is also given to Wesley's 1784 Sunday Service, Methodism's Anglican roots and the progress of liturgical renewal in the United Methodist Church. The project concludes that an exposure to the writings and sacramental practices of the Wesleys increases the desire for more frequent celebrations of the eucharist.
