- Abstract
- This paper explores empathy from a psychological and developmental perspective, from a perspective in the therapeutic process and from a theological viewpoint. The author integrates both a cognitive and a subjective style of writing, using theoretical materials, personal illustrations and examples from his psychotherapy and pastoral counseling caseload. The author states that both subjective (affective) and objective (cognitive) empathy are essential kinds of empathy in the development of mature empathy. The conclusion is reached that both psychotherapy and pastoral care (counseling) strive to use empathetic communications which take place in the context of human relationships.
