Abstract
  • This is a study of churches based upon the theory that churches are systems that are affected by their surroundings. The researcher defines a properly functioning congregation as a thriving congregation, which meets its goals in various areas of its life. Churches that fail to thrive need to look for the barriers that prevent them from accomplishing this goal. This study is an effort to find the barriers in two churches in western Indiana by means of interviews, surveys, observation of groups within the churches, and from statistical records. The resulting data showed several internal and external barriers that prevented the churches from thriving.
