  • This project-thesis addresses the church's lack of a theology of intimate friendship by describing a conference on friendship, sexuality, and the church, and reporting the results of a questionnaire on how contemporary Christians understand the role of friendship in their lives. Using the creation narratives and parallel New Testament themes, biblical bases for a theology of intimate friendship are described. The psychological need for friendship in all stages of adulthood is documented. Societal, sexual and ethical dilemmas about intimate friendships are described. Summary claims for a theology of intimate friendship are made along with implications for the ministry of pastoral counseling.
