Abstract

Exploratory reserach was conducted to generate a descriptive summary of the coaching philosophies within the sport of football. A literature review and survey revealed two primary philosophies coaches have employed: principle- and performance-based. The researcher investigated the principle-based approach, primarily because of the values these coaches shared. The principle-oriented group contained a subset that articulated a biblical focus. A series of interviews was conducted to discover what connection biblically-based coaches might have with the leadership of Christ. The results suggested that coaching could function as a form of discipleship. This led to an exegetical investigation of the Gospel of Matthew. The result was the identification of a set of values and practices that helped Christian coaches better connect their faith with their profession. This research formed the foundation for a biblical approach to Christian coaching, understood as an expression of disciple building.
