Abstract
  • This project develops a model through which persons in a local congregation might grow in their understanding and appreciation of the Lord's Supper. Research into the biblical, historical, and theological roots of the sacrament led to the development of a theological framework which featured the primary aspects of remembrance, proclamation, participation, and thanksgiving. This research also contributed to the planning of a study series, sermon series, and worship series which involved the congregation of First United Methodist Church, Moweaqua, Illinois, in a consideration of the sacrament's place in their faith experience. Involvement in the project by this congregation led to a broader understanding of the sacrament, an enhanced experience of it, and a willingness to commune more frequently. The research, sacramental model, project components, and conclusions explored in this paper provide a sound foundation upon which other local congregations can, and should, develop similar efforts to enhance their experience of the Lord's Supper.
