- Abstract
- African-American churches can be renewed with liberation-oriented ministries that teach Afrocentric history, culture, traditions. Ministry that affirms racial identity, self-concept and community empowerment can bring about the transformation of African-American United Methodist churches. The project outlined was a study of some of the themes of Afrocentric spirituality and implementation of those themes in programs of ministry. Two projects, a rite of passage program for boys and a convocation-type event, were developed and evaluated. Revitalization can occur in the lives of individuals, churches and communities when African-American culture, history and traditions are taught and affirmed.
