Abstract
  • This paper on the relatively new field of psychological cancer postulates that psychotherapeutic ministry to the seriously ill has a life-enhancing effect. Research includes: 1) studies by Dr Selye and others showing that the body's biochemical reactions to stress result in hormonal imbalances which can promote abnormal cell growth and lessen immunological activity. Cancer is understood to result from depressed immunological activity due to stress; 2) drs LeShan, Kissen, and others have demonstrated that life history and present personality style predispose a person to contracting cancer; 3) placebo studies show that a person's beliefs and expectations have real impact on physiological functioning. To encourage hope and zestful living is therfore seen as essential to treatment of cancer patients. Cancer counseling recommends exploration of stressful events prior to diagnosis. Treatment of psychological wounds helps restore hope and the will to live. In addition to standard psychotherapeutic techniques, cancer counseling uses relaxation and visualisation techniques as well as hypnosis to aid in physical healing, pain control and the maintenance of hope.
