- Abstract
- Many preachers complain of experiencing bouts of depression during their preaching ministry. By studying the contemporary and historical literature on the subject, looking to the scriptures, and conducting interviews with seasoned preachers, the author reveals some of the common causes of this phenomenon. The personality of the preacher, the preacher's call, burden, health, ambitions, and sin are all discussed, concluding with a position which suggests that depression, if understood and embraced in a healthy way, may be a 'thorn in the flesh' that God uses to sanctify the preacher and deepen his preaching ministry.
