  • Most laypersons of mainline denominations do not offer a verbal witness. This project develops a questionnaire designed to test fifty-seven possible barriers for qualitative research on the issue using focus groups. This process was carried out in First United Methodist Church, Millington, Tennessee, in the fall of 1995. The project discovered four categories of barriers: lack of biblical knowledge, lack of practical knowledge on how to witness, cultural effects of Enlightenment thinking, and negative effects of a 'Christendom' mindset. The project presents a process to help people overcome these barriers.
