Abstract
  • The research project explored how religious women who have been sexually abused have used the process of pastoral psychotherapy to deepen their commitment to religious life. This was a qualitative study using a stratified sample of six Sisters who had been sexually abused as children and had engaged in some form of pastoral counseling regarding this issue. The results indicated that the convent was not always a safe place, that pastoral counselors have not always addressed the issue of sexual abuse, and that most of the participants have used the process of pastoral psychotherapy to recommit to religious life. The study clarified implications to follow in further study.
