Abstract
  • The thesis of this project is that 'professionalized,' ordained ministry often hinders pastors' proximity to the impoverished. The author researched ways in which ministers experience the tension between primary tasks of ordained ministry, of which relationships with the poor are a part, and the more tangible and measurable secondary and tertiary marks of ministry. The method of study for this project was largely ethnographic, consisting of field interviews with fifteen elders. The author concluded that the competitive appointment system diminishes clergy relationships with self, others, God, each other, friends and the poor.
