Abstract
  • This thesis addresses the identity of a pastoral counselor by asking, 'What is pastoral counseling, who practices and where?' Using the metaphor of a bridge to symbolize the flow of ideas from the culture into the church, the research reveals the influence of depth psychology on the development of the specialized ministry of pastoral counseling. Two case studies compare the ministry of a pastoral counselor in a private practice of psychotherapy and with a congregation. The conclusion is that psychotherapeutic and pastoral skills are two sides of one coin which constitute and enrich the identity of a pastoral counselor.
