Abstract
  • The thesis is to apply the leadership insights depicted in Edwin H Freidman's Generation to Generation to a local declining congregation to bring change. The method is: develop a theological rationale for the use of family systems as it relates to pastoral leadership; explain Friedman's understanding of Bowen's family systems; apply the leadership theory and theology of family systems to a local congregation; and, evaluate the effectiveness of this theory and theology in a local church setting. This essay concludes that possibilities exist for using systems thinking in pastoral leadership to bring congregational change.
