Abstract
  • The ministry of the deacon in the Presbyterian Church (USA) is one of ordained service, compassion, care and outreach. Although they comprise a significant proportion of lay leadership, deacons are frequently underused and appear to flounder. This project examines this ministry of the deacon and provides specific options for its improvement. Through the use of surveys and in-depth interviews, the project identifies four pivotal areas where deacons appear to flounder: 1) biblical-historical roots; 2) understanding their role as 'the Body' of Christ; 3) servanthood; 4) purposeful organization. The result of this project is an options notebook, 'Deacons in Ministry', which is designed to improve the potentially vital ministry of most deacons.
