Abstract
  • Mainline churches have often baptized infants of parents who lack adequate teaching about the meaning of baptism as initiation into the church. Local churches should be more intentional and effective in their approach to baptismal instruction. This project involved the development of a program of baptismal instruction, including the development of a baptismal policy by the local church session, the preparation of printed materials and a seminar for parents as well as a sermon series on baptism for the congregation. The major conclusion reached is that the model of a group seminar can be effective as a teaching device as well as a tool for assimilating people into the congregation. A second conclusion is that a baptismal policy enhances a congregation's initial dealings with requests for baptism of children and the policy is itself a teaching tool.
