Abstracto

The project examines the professional development of the US Army chaplains in their first year of active duty in light of the author's understanding of ordained ministry and the special character of Army chaplaincy. Emphasis is placed on the 'ministry of presence' in the work of the chaplain. 'Ministry of presence' is a legitimate aspect of the chaplaincy not only because it prepares for other forms of ministry but because of what such presence itself does. The project includes a description and analysis of the results of a three-stage effort to deal creatively with the training by which chaplains are integrated into the Army. This experiment incorporates the concept of 'ministry of presence' into the chaplains' training program. A final chapter draws conclusions, makes recommendations and notes how the project might be useful to others.
