Abstract
  • This project develops and evaluates guidelines for the effective use of the genogram in premarital guidance by clergy in the parish setting. It uses family systems and object relations theory to support the research. The project does not provide a comprehensive premarital counseling program but does present a model developed within an Episcopalian context. The practical research is done by questionnaire-based interviews with twelve couples who experience the genogram as the primary framework for their four to six session premarital programs. The evaluation indicates that the genogram is an effective tool for helping couples prepare for Christian marriage.
