Abstract
  • This project examines, historically and theologically, the season of Advent, designing and testing ways to make Advent celebrations meaningful in local congregations. Beginning with the historical origins of Advent, the project traces its development from early lectionaries of Spain, Gaul, and Italy through medieval, Reformation, and modern movements to the Lutheran Book of Worship and its recognition of the past in contemporary liturgy. Practical suggestions for Advent celebration are tested in two congregational settings.
