- Employing a case-study methodology, the author researched the impact of an African mission immersion in the Democratic Republic of the Congo upon lay mission volunteers. Utilizing questionnaires and interviews, the author measured the immersion's impact upon respondent's spiritual world view, orientation, and God image, finding considerable movement therein. Analyzing the outcomes using both psychological and missiological theory, the author concludes that the rising trend in short-term mission service represents a fecund moment in the spiritual development of those who serve. In closing, the author reflects how appropriate pastoral shepherding in shaping international immersions can enhance that experience so that optimal spiritual growth and integration is engendered.
