  • The author developed the hypothesis that Christian devotional life could help increase compassion, defined as 'alleviating suffering' or 'suffering with,' within the church and from the church to the world. He tested the hypothesis in a support group of nine members from a local church. The author and support group developed a profile of behavior changes desired from devotions and designed and tested devotional models to effect the changes. The program demonstrated a positive correlation between praying for others and increased compassion toward them, and discovered that primary group reference is probably a more significant behavior-determining factor than devotions.
