Abstract
  • The decline in membership and worship attendance in the mainline church over the past 40 years is well documented. It is the author's belief that the key to the revitalization of the church, spiritual and numerical, is effective evangelism. Yet in most local churches evangelism is not taught or practiced, given little or no financial support, and in many cases discouraged by pastors and denominational hierarchy. Through this Doctor of Ministry project Pastor Tom Vencuss developed and implemented a program of evangelism designed to develop a greater understanding of, and desire to do, evangelism within a mainline congregation. At the end most participants reported a moderate or significant change in their attitude toward evangelism with the most significant change in their attitude toward evangelism with the most significant change occurring over a long (two-year) period of time.
