  • The thesis of this project is that preachers can motivate congregants to action by employing key motivational principles. The author researched motivational principles in psychology, education, the Bible, and the writings of Ellen G. White. He taught these principles in a six-hour seminar, had participants deliver sermons using seminar principles, and evaluated the effectiveness of the principles. Research suggested that addressing personal needs enhances motivation. Three principal factors affect intrinsic motivation: self-esteem, participation, and most importantly the gospel. Principles of adult learning, learning style theory, and the 4MAT system of learning potentially enhance motivation. Active audience response to lay sermons increased, but not significantly.
