Abstract
  • This is a case study of a French-Canadian ethnic parish, Precious Blood, in Holyoke, MA. The study examines the economic, historical, sociological, canonical and ecclesiological factors that combined to allow the creation, as well as the death, of an institution that validated the life, dignity and faith of one immigrant group in a new and often hostile environment. A new understanding of 'parish,' coming out of Vatican II, has been institutionalized by the new Code of Canon Law. Using these tools, the author details why and how ethnic parishes ought to be reconstituted as 'mission churches' for new immigrants.
