  • Within the Presbyterian Church (USA) it is common practice to require candidates for ordination as a Minister of Word and Sacrament to undergo a psychological evaluation as part of the preparatory process for ordination. A survey of pastors within Homestead Presbytery regarding their experiences during the psychological evaluation and their perceptions of its utility was completed. Findings indicate a lack of benchmarks to support the usefulness of these evaluations, a potential for harm, and a pervasive lack of understanding regarding its purpose. Recommendations for alternative means of assessing readiness for ordained ministry are presented.
