Abstract
  • This dissertation examines the historical and the practical surrounding the development of Jonathan Edward's preaching career. Five homiletical stages can be observed extending from his youth to his first pastorate in New York in the 1720's, and continuing until his death in 1758. From this information, a homiletical improvement guide for twenty-first century practitioners will be presented by modernizing a plan that mirrors Edwards's structural transitions from beginning to end. The author researched books, periodicals, dissertations, historical sites, internet sources, and Edwards's manuscripts at the Reinecke Library at Yale University.
