Abstract
  • Spiritual formation is central to the mission of the church. One method rarely used by Protestants is the study of biographies of spiritual masters with the express purpose of teaching the lessons of spiritual development. Six spiritual masters, Augustine, Teresa of Avila, Martin Luther, Jonathan Edwards, Harry Emerson Fosdick, and Georgia Harkness, were presented to a study group at the United States Naval Academy. Pre- and post-testing with a professionally developed instrument to ascertain if measurable change occurred as a consequence of exposure to these spiritual masters was done. Other feedback, the test results and lessons are evaluated.
