  • Small-group Sunday morning Bible studies were initiated to build caring relationships within the congregation which would encourage members to care for one another. A study on the theology of the church as community shows that when the community of believers is faithful to the truth it is radically different from the human community. Recruitment and training of leaders for small groups is essential for this model to work. Adult participation in Bible class on Sunday morning increased by fifty-four per cent over the same period (September-November) a year ago when the model was initiated at First Lutheran Church, Birmingham, Alabama.
