Abstract
  • The thesis of this project is that evangelism is vital for American mainline denominations for biblical, theological and practical reasons. The project includes biblical and theological examinations of evangelism and a discussion of church membership trends and various theories surrounding them. The church growth movement is discussed. The paper concludes with suggested plans of action for denominations and presbyteries. The project involves a questionniare administered to clergy and elders in a midwestern presbytery. The project indicates reluctance regarding 'evangelism' while showing need from some type of membership recruitment effort.
