Abstract
  • The author presents eleven case studies of persons with whom she worked--persons with severe retardation, with multiple handicapping conditions, and neglected elderly. These cases demonstrate that such persons, regardless of impairment, can grow through experience of God's love in trustful interpersonal relationships. The cases also show that, in spite of recent improvement, some persons continue to be neglected and abused in institutions. The study advocates strongly that these persons are created in the image of God, and that healing and growth of severely impaired persons are essential parts of a local church's pastoral care.
