  • The purpose of this project was to develop and evaluate a lay pastoral care program for the frail elderly member of the local United Methodist Church. The program utilized Korean family values by reconstructing the ideology of filial piety. It was implemented by the researcher,a Korean-American pastor, in a European-American congregation. Volunteers learned about the needs of the frail elderly, namely, mental depression, physical disability, isolation and loneliness. Volunteers were paired with frail elderly congregational members, and learned how to provide pastoral care as though they were part of an extended family shaped by Korean family values.
