- Abstract
- This study researched and tested the hypothesis that local churches are able to provide adequate and, in some ways, superior training of prospective pastors. After studying the training of elders as described in the New Testament, tracing the history of theological education in the United States, and conducting case studies of some contemporary church-centered training programs, the author concluded that it is feasible for local churches to train pastors. The hypothesis was tested in a training program conducted by the author at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon. Five students were trained in hermeneutics and homiletics over a six-month period. The results of this training program confirmed the author's notion that an alternative model of theological training in which the local church assumes primary responsibility can and should be attempted.
