- Abstract
- This project explores the relationship of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, promulgated by the Second Vatican Council, to the preparation of young people for the sacrament of Confirmation. The author sets forth underlying theological assumptions and looks at the catechumenate in its present form by journeying with one group of catechumens and sponsors from the precatechumenate in January 1982 to the celebration of Confirmation on Easter Sunday, April 1983. Examined closely are the various stages of the RCIA: precatechumenate, catechumenate, special preparation (Lent) and mystagogy. Monthly teaching sessions, catechumen group meetings, sponsor catechumen sessions, service projects, liturgical rites, and Christian Living Days are treated. The role and ministry of catechumens, sponsors, catechists, liturgical ministers, and catechumenate team are considered in turn. The catechumenate renews the parish community while that community is reaching out to initiate persons through Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist and this Doctor of Ministry project shows how all these various ministries function together to form a true catechumenate for Confirmation.
