Abstract
  • This thesis is the study of the application of pastoral diagnostic variables in the counseling of recovering alcoholics. Three pastoral diagnostic variables - communion, repentance, and grace or gratefulness - of the seven pastoral diagnostic variables designated by Paul W Pruyser are found to be significant themes in the life stories of these recovering alcoholics and are used effectively as counseling parameters. Four of these alcoholics in long-term sobriety are interviewed in oral and written sessions. Two of them in short-term sobriety are seen in either short- or long-term counseling. Thematic creative stories and the Pastoral Diagnostic Inventory are helpful tools in clarifying these themes in the counseling of these two alcoholics.
