Abstract
  • This project proposes that a new understanding of cherye as a liturgical practice of family memorial ritual can act as bridge for passing traditional Korean family values in America. Cherye offers ethical, social, and religious functions in Korean-American society: order, community, transformation. The project employs literature research to formulate a theological basis, interviews to determine congregational needs, and field study to apply parish context. The project presents a new model of chumorye that includes a modified form of cherye for Korean United Methodist churches.
