  • This study explores the theology of the images of God found in Kahdas islassitas garrigas jaukas Dzeesmas (1739), the first hymnal of Latvian Lutherans of the Pietistic movement of the Brudergemeine in the early part of the eighteenth century. The images of God are discussed in light of the early history of this movement. Traditional criticism of this movement finds it superficial and a means of control used by threatened overlords. This study, however, finds that the metaphoric power of its hymns is a profound source of life in the midst of social and religious oppression in a feudal society.
